PEACEFUL GATHERINGS
GIVES VOICE TO:

OCCUPY ELMIRA-CORNING

Occupy Elmira Corning will hold a Rally on

Friday February 3rd at Centerway Square on Market Street in Corning. 3 P.M.

Occupy Elmira/Corning calls for a rally to protest and oppose the NDAA, SOPA, and PIPA legislation to be held at Centerway Square in Corning on February 3rd starting at 3:00 P.M.

The National Defense Authorization Act has a provision that allows indefinite detention of American citizens on American soil. The Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act both would allow massive censoring of the Internet by making it difficult for users to post content that may marginally imply copyright infringement. Though both SOPA and PIPA have been shelved for now, all three of these laws illustrates the continuing diminishing of rights that this nation has seen for at least the past thirty years.

The Occupy movement stands as the voice of those who have witnessed their economic and political rights evaporate for the benefit of corporate power and those in the government who do their bidding. These laws are an extension of a broader operation, alongside calls for austerity programs, that maintain an unjust power inequality that negatively affects the rights granted to us by the Constitution and Bill Of Rights. The Occupy movement declares that now is not the time for complacency, and asks all those who have felt their rights diminish to join us for this important rally. At this time when criticism of politics and our government are at an all time high, the movement offers an alternative of direct democratic action to address the problems we all face. Now more than ever, our voices must be heard in ways that go around the obstacles put up by the status quo.
